Recently saw a question about a girl asking how she can learn to trust her horse again. I don’t know the scenario…nor do I really care.

The things I see wrong with this:

1. The wording. You don’t need to regain trust in your horse so much as you need to regain confidence in yourself. Don’t blame your horse for your fear.

2. Horses are not malicious. They act out of pain, fear, or distress. Check saddle fit, bit, bridle, boots, teeth, get a massage therapist out, make sure he is not acting badly out of pain. If he’s fine, then eliminate fear and distress through calming yourself down. Work on ground manners and basic under saddle work like halting and moving off leg until he responds to you and sees you as a safety net and not a threat to his well-being.

3. Get over it. I can’t think of one thing that my horse could do that would make me question my trust in HER. She is spooky and stubborn and can be a downright bitch sometimes, and I have been in situations where I have just got off and cried. But never have I lost trust in her for it. Suck it up and work on what needs to be worked on to fix it (which is probably more than likely yourself).
